Demonstration of lumbar motion. Two photographs of a life-size spine model were joined into one gif. One vertebral body was colored pink to help indentify the anterior and posterior aspects. The motion is unnatural, but it does offer a unique look at the action of the facet joints. Without the facet joint capsules in this model, their sliding action is exaggerated, as seen in the uppermost part of the pink. It is believed by some that the facet joints alone are capable of supporting 50% of the spine's load.

This animated gif was made with proofs from a photo session by Douglas Kirkland.
